AN AWFUL FATE-
THOMAS TRUETT BURNS IN MARIPOSA COUNTY JAIL
1892
Merced, Sept 5 -[By the Associated Press] A special to the
Sun today from Mariposa states that yesterday the ruins of the Mariposa
county jail had cooled off sufficiently to permit of an investigation
into the question whether Thomas Truett, the prisoner confined in the
jail at the time of the fire, had been burned or not. A careful
search through the debris was made and the bones of the unfortunate man
were found. There is no doubt that Truett set the fire himself,
but whether intentionally or by accident will never be known.
It is now reported that cetain parties in Mariposa heard some one in
the jail calling "Police! police!' just before the fire was discovered,
but paid no attention to it , thinking it was the ravings of a some drunken man.
